Can students get on in life without studying literature?
Many students going to college feel they “already know enough English to get on in the world without studying more – especially literature” (Watson). There are many people who agree with this statement and probably some who disagree. An important factor that may sway a person’s opinion would be how he or she personally defines “get[ting] on in the world.” Some people would define “get[ting] on in the world” as just being employed, while others strive to become educated people.There are many people who believe that they can live in the world without learning any more English or Literature after high school. While still others say that eventually we will not need to know how to write at all. Instead, our computers will simply take dictation from us. A majority of today’s jobs do not require employees to have a vast knowledge of literature in order for them to do their job proficiently. There are many technical and business colleges that do not require their students to take any literature courses as a requirement for graduation. The students who graduate from these institutions often earn enormous salaries immediately following their graduation and they are generally viewed as being successful and know
Many large North American corporations are beginning to realize that a capable understanding of Literature and the Arts is as important to their employees as the sound technical knowledge that they possess. One IBM executive who is in charge of a group of engineers, said that he wishes that his engineers could demonstrate a more advanced writing style. He writes, “I got a lot of guys who are brilliant, but they can’t write a decent memo, let alone something longer, and so guys who can write better move up because they can state more clearly what their ideas are. They get more credit because it’s easier to tell what they’re doing” (Carbone 1). Many North American corporations are embarrassed that their employees cannot converse intelligently on the topics of art and literature with their counterparts from overseas. These counterparts are often those who have been well versed in literature during their college education. ledgeable people in their respective fields, but they are not considered to be highly educated. The study of literature allows people to extract important ideas from stories, and acquire insights into human nature more quickly than they could through first hand experience.
