How Far is Too Far?
“This is going to hurt me more than it will hurt you.” All whippings began with this phrase. Parents say this to reiterate their love for their children even though they’re going to physically punish them. But it can get out of hand when parents begin to take out their anxieties and frustrations on their children. These can be burdens to children, especially when the parent uses the child as a punching bag, behavior can lead to more than just a broken bone or a black eye. Physical punishment towards children is admissible until it threatens a child’s livelihood. Take for instance this scenario: A parent comes home from a stressful day of work and sits down to kick off his or her shoes. From the moment the parent walks in, the chaos of a busy household ensues. The children are running around frantically when boom, she walks into the room to see a shattered glass and chocolate milk spilled all over the white carpet. The parent immediately snatches the child and furiously starts to whip the child. Whipping turns into beating and before it’s over the child is being rushed off to the emergency room. A simple scenario in which a parent comes home from a stressful day of work turns into a nightmare fo
A simple scenario where the parent is tired and the child has made mistake can lead to child abuse. The idea that spanking is good for a child and has no long-term affects is false, and is proven by Tom’s case and other similar cases everyday. So the infamous phrase which parent’s say at the start of all spankings, “This is going to hurt me more than it will hurt you,” is wrong. It will never hurt Tom’s mom as much as it hurt him and other kids like him. Therefore, people are left to draw their own conclusion to the question, how far is too far? This is how a traditional spanking becomes a controversial issue that divides the nation with one simple question; How far is too far? The answer to this question can vary from person to person. However 97% of Americans believe in spanking or have admitted to spanking their children at one time or another (Suzanne Shell). In some cases parents tend to hit kids out of anger, but in other cases parents discipline their children with the proper methods. For example the case of a six year old that constantly hits his peers, parents at first may reprimand the child with a verbal warning and then with a spanking. The child is in need of spanking. Its constant hitting of his peers is not permissible. When verbally warned, the child ignores it and continues to hit his peers. When the child is physically reprimanded, the hitting of his peers ceases. In this case and in many others, children are reprimanded approiately with spankings and the results are some just as if not more effective then
