Feminism in the Middle East


            Women who should have equal status with men, have been degraded and disregarded in numerous ways in the Middle East. The role of women in the prevalent circumstances is restricted and their freedom is undoubtedly limited. Given the lack of freedom, women have been demanding basic human rights. The Middle Eastern system of governance and education has fostered male dominance and power over women due to insecurity, male pride and various other reasons. Therefore, women rights and freedom of expression in the Middle East are restrained by various rules which distort identity and sexuality and prevent the blossoming of the feminine aspect and it is time to change this.
             The identity of women is slowly getting eroded with onslaught of regulations in the Middle Eastern. Women have a weak and feeble voice and with control by the clergy through their regulations women struggle to express their opinions. Women's identity is at risk as males have overpowered their female counterparts in most aspects of life. Men in the Middle East though respect women, simultaneously degrade them by looking down upon them as second class citizens thus making them a victim to men's restrictions. De Beauvoir clarifies the ".counselling man to treat her as a slave while persuading her that she is a queen" (De Beauvoir). Due to this repression, voices of women are being unheard and male dominance is prevailing in the name of Islam, which is morally, ethically, religiously and socially incorrect. A woman has a moral.
             responsibility, in accordance to nature's law, to express beauty to induce procreation. If this does not happen, then women's sexuality will be suppressed, resulting in frustration. Evidently, due to this, women are revolting and supporting self- expression. The blooming of society can only take place when both masculinity and femininity are respected and honoured. In this regard, world religions have proclaimed the equality of man and woman.
