The Calm after the Storm

A storm is a tumultuous reaction; an uproar or controversy. When one would think of a storm one would think of crazy winds, pouring rain, bad lightning and the sound of loud thunder. In life, one could think of a hard time and refer to that situation as a "storm". No one would really refer to a happy time or a relieving situation as a "storm". Kate Chopin wrote a short story called "The Storm", and in this story there are two married characters named Calixta and Alcee, they have history together and a storm brings them together unintentionally. During this storm Alcee needs shelter and he takes his shelter in Calixta's house. Calixta's husband and son at the store and Calixta watches out the window at the storm, Alcee is behind her and when the storm begins to frighten her she turns away and into Alcee's arms. From that moment on adulterous acts are taking place such as sex, that ended in a sense of relief and happiness. It is possible that while the storm represented a threat to marital harmony, it also cleared out unhappy emotions and made way for new growth in each of their marriages. .
In part two of "The Storm" we realize that Calixta is persuing her duties as a wife and mother by sewing, she has been washing, and just working really hard. During this time period nothing else was expected from a woman. Then Calixts has an affair with another man, and this is unexpected from women at this point in time. The storm is an obvious symbol in the story. This storm brings together Alcee and Calixta without either of their intentions causing them to end up in each others arm. There is a bolt of lightning that strikes a chinaberry tree and is an explosion of energy in the storm and at the same time this bolt of lightening shows an explosion of feelings and emption builds up in the house between Alcee and Calixta and that is when the, sexual encounter occurs. The storm shakes things up and relieves the remaining feelings between the two.
