Table Talk
A casual passerby is most likely to overlook an eatery that opened its doors about a year back in the quaint Kohsar market. Canopied by the foliage of pink bougainvillea, “Table Talk” beacons visitors because of its warm ambiance and friendly atmosphere. The owners are always there to greet every customer and entertain their every whim. Terracotta walls lined with picturesque paintings and photographs add to the pleasant atmosphere that the owners have tried to create. The place is frequented mostly by ladies of about middle age, foreigners or people who want to get away from the madness of every day life, to have a quite meal. This little eatery is the brainchild of Riffat and Wafa, who after meeting at a party decided to open this place. Wafa had just closed down Gup Shup, a small eatery with an adjacent studio to display the works of emerging artists. The place did not fare well with Isloohites and had to be closed down after nearly a year and a half of its inception. Wafa wanted to start another venture and this seemed to be the perfect opportunity. The launch of Table Talk was without formal advertising, partly because
On visiting Table Talk, one is most likely to see foreigners eating there, or aunties who are mostly friends of the owners. They serve both local and continental foods, with a new list of specials every week. But stress is not being laid to attract new customers. If we have a look at the kind of people who generally go out to eat, we will see that restaurants in Islamabad are usually filled with groups of youngsters, families and executive types, who mostly go out for lunch and prefer places that are close to their work place. Table Talk is not the kind of place that caters to any of the above. A glance at the general socializing habits of Isloohites shows that the impression “city of the living dead” is very apt for Islamabad. Unlike Lahore and Karachi, where people are fond of going out to eat; Islamabad has a laid back attitude when it comes to eating out. For example, Copper Kettle is one of the most happening places in both Lahore and Karachi, but when it opened in Islamabad, because of low sales, it had to be closed down. The only place that has been able to pass the test of time is Papasallis; it is still going strong after nearly twelve year
