Heinrich Schliemann

Although Schliemann is credited with Troy's original discovery, many other scientists have contributed their research to Troy's entire discovery. Thus, I don’t believe that Schliemann should receive all the credit for discovering Troy. He did spur the original search for Troy, but he was aided and pushed by other scientists. Although he paid for most of the expedition, this was his choice, for he wanted to find the treasures out of his own curiosity. Other scientists also helped him by dating the artifacts that he found and proving to him that he had not found Troy. This compelled him to search for many years until he found the real Troy. By providing motivation, tools, and knowledge necessary to advance the expedition, I believe that Schliemann shouldn’t receive all the credit, but roughly ½ of it.

be a very prestigious architect and merchant. In 1871, Schliemann arrived in northwestern Turkey to begin excavations in places where he believed the lost city of Troy was located. Because his family was poor, he had to leave school at the age of 14 to earn a living. He continued studying on his own, however, showing an exceptional ability to master foreign languages. Soon he began to exploit his remarkable aptitude for business dealings, which enabled him to amass a large fortune early in life and to retire at the age of 41. From then on, he devoted himself to archaeology. He was also able to afford the expedition because he went to the gold rush.
