I am at a party with a couple of friends eating and discussing social activities for the summer when suddenly a man walks up to me wearing a sophisticated but irregular looking glass and a broad smile saying "Hello Yinbra". This irregular looking glass is a wearable technology known as the google glass or simply 'glass'. I had a confused face on and promptly asked "have we met?" and he replies, "not officially". He got my name from a friend of his at the party, but was able to call me out by my Instagram user name after a quick search using his glass within a few minutes. I immediately felt unease at this party and with this discovery as I imagined anyone else would. Technology in this age makes things easier for us but the google glass poses a big problem because it threatens individual privacy, causes digital dementia, and raises concerns in affecting social interactions.
The Google glass has a camera that allows the user to take pictures and record video with ease and instantly share it with the world. It becomes possible for a glass user to infringe on others privacy by taking pictures of them without seeking their consent. According to Guynn of the LA times, in her article "Google Glass Sees All-and that Raises Privacy Concerns," this has led to its ban in common places such as bars, casinos amongst other. For Example, the Business Insider reports the attack of a woman wearing the google glass at the Molotov bar in San Francisco by its occupants; this shows how fast the public is rejecting the idea of the glass. In addition, unlawful monitoring of citizens by individuals or the government is easier by this technology. Google glass technology compromises existing privacy and eavesdropping laws (Schreiber). Furthermore, safety and confidentiality becomes a concern for the public. An example is the ability to record an individual inputting his or her password on an electronic device without their knowledge.
