The Importance of Memory

The quote,"Life without memory is no life at all, just as intelligence without the possibility of expression is not really an intelligence. Our memory is our coherence, our reason, our feeling, even our actions. Without it, we are nothing.", stated by Luis Bunuel in the excerpt, An Unspeakable Betrayal, takes a side on whether memory is significant to the human mind or just an obstacle. The given quote is indicating that having memory is substantial and beneficial to the human mind rather than having no memory at all. Some of the reasons why having memory is so important is because having memory can allow you to understand mistakes, to remember the greatest moments in your life, and to give us feelings such as love, pain, or hate. Therefore, the many things that can affect us .
A reason why having memory is good is because it allows you to prevent mistakes from happening in the near future. For example, when you were young and your elders told you specifically to not touch the stove (especially when it is burning), you probably did not listen and touched the stove out of curiosity. However, that curiosity led to a mistake. You touched the stove and burned yourself, inflicting pain on you which is one of the many ways you can remember things. By touching that sizzling stove, you made yourself remember what to do next time. Therefore, with that painful burn on your finger, you are most likely not going to touch that stove again, since you now have the knowledge telling you that touching a stove could result in that same burning effect if it was turned on. Another example would be failing a test or an important project in a class. Most people would be bitter or disappointed in themselves if they had failed something in their classes because they did not study or review for the test. As a result, the student knew that he or she would have to try harder and actually study more next time, so they could be more prepared next time.
