Why EQ is More Important than IQ


             For centuries intelligence has been thought to be what separated humans from animals. The ability to reason and continue to learn and better himself has been the standard that we measure all creatures against. However, in recent times the idea that emotion rather than intellect could be the fine line between man and significantly lower forms of life has become popular. Emotional Quotient (EQ) is a way to measure how a person recognizes emotions in himself, herself or others and manages these emotional states to work better as a group or as a team. Intelligent Quotient (IQ) is a value that indicates a person's ability to learn, understand and apply information and skills in a meaningful way. One of the major differences between EQ and IQ is what part of person's mental abilities they measure: understanding emotion or .
             understanding information. The book "Emotional Intelligence" which is written by Daniel Goleman in 1996 suggested that Emotional Intelligence is might actually be more important than IQ. Goleman cites five basic elements of high EQ: awareness of your feelings as you experience them; empathy, or awareness of what others are feeling; managing your moods; staying motivated and optimistic despite setbacks, and interacting with other people. Some people believe that standard measures of intelligence are too narrow and do not encompass the full range of human intelligence. They suggest the ability to understand and express emotions can play an equal if not even more important role how people fare in life. .
