Narcissism and the Internet

Nowadays, when we randomly open one of social media website's pages, a bunch of flashy photos (selfies) appears on the screen. Social media users update something about their good news or bad mood, and they share everything about "Me" stuff. It seems like concentration and central-ness of individuals are necessary for the narcissist especially through the Internet culture, as Internet websites provide huge stages for narcissistic people to exhibit everything that makes them feel satisfied and delighted. Internet culture is the crucial part of narcissism, and it indeed produces a lot of narcissists through social networking for two reasons. The first one is that social media websites encourage self-admiration; the second one is that Internet culture leads young people to spread their vanities.
First of all, Internet websites inspire self-admiration significantly. More and more young people like to put their selfies on the Internet. This makes people to wonder that why it is so important to magnify their eyes or minimize their faces in the picture. Due to admire themselves greatly, the narcissists need others to admire them as much as possible. "According to a National Institutes of Health study, 10 percent of young Americans exhibited symptoms of narcissistic personality disorder, while only 3 percent of older Americans did." (Marche, 2013, P.56) Narcissism indeed spread dramatically in young groups of people because young individuals always focus on and pay attention to them too much. It is known that teenagers' social life nowadays is chatting and sharing online, and they show narcissism by pictures. Furthermore, mostly narcissistic people think they are special because of the compliments from Internet. For example, "You are amazing!" "You are so pretty and must be the best model." Those comments exactly make a person feel glad and special. Most of teenagers would like to be famous because that makes them feel special and being central.
