Aung San Suu Kyi: Leading Burma to Democracy


            This paper will discuss and explore what challenges Aung San Suu Kyi have faced in the past and continue to face in the present and future, in effort of turning BurmaMyanmar's militant government into a democratic nation. Aung San Suu Kyi has dedicated over two decades of her life in efforts to establish a fair voting system that allows the Burmese people to gain better human rights. Facing this daunting task of separating her image from her political leader father's, Aung San Suu Kyi possesses a leadership style that has won over millions of people with her charismatic and eloquent writings and speeches and most importantly, nonviolence with fierce defiance.
             INTRODUCTION.
             Aung San: Burmese Political Hero.
             Myanmar, the name given by military official, once Burma, is a country with a long tumultuous and mostly isolated history. Within the last 100 years Burma has undergone several changes, good and bad, but one thing has always remained the same. The people of Burma want to be treated fairly by their government. .
             Burma gained it's independence back from Britain as a result of clever game of politics played by Aung San Suu Kyi's late father, Aung San. Aung San is revered as "the founding father of Burmese independence (Popham 199). In 1852 Britain annexed lower Burma as part of British India domain later to be separated from India1. Aung San joined the Thakin2 movement, a radical group of students who wanted to reform the British presence in the universities after students realized the British were teaching them elitist ideas and leaving out the principle of the minority. With the intention of gaining trust of the people simply because they possessed one unique characteristic, a British education, Aung San along with Thakin (U) Nu rose to leadership by creating. At the beginning of World War II, Burmese leaders issued an arrest warrant as a bargain for British cooperation, however Aung San, escaped to china.
