R&B videos

R and B videos have really been the most watched mainstream videos, especially amongst teenagers, both white and black. The question is whether or not the stereotypes presented in these videos are taking a negative toll on the viewers, or worse, whether they are sending the wrong message about the culture of black artists who produce these videos. Depending on the viewer the message can be construed in widely different ways: depending largely on whether the viewer ‘can relate’ to the material, or whether they are helplessly clueless and never come in contact with anyone of black culture and watch the videos.

My opinion on the message about being sent is not one I would worry about to the affect it has on myself or of anyone I know. I would be very concerned with those seeing these images of ‘booty’, liquor, and the ‘bling bling’ flaunted in these videos. It is very obvious to someone like myself, who is somewhat sophisticated to the fact, that these are merely the fantasies of the artists being expressed to grab the attention of young aspiring teens dreaming of similar easy lifestyles. Knowing that not all see the hard work that

Looking at the differences between male and female artists’ videos, I was surprised that similar themes were equally used by both (sex, wealth, beauty). In the few videos I watched in class, the woman’s videos did wear revealing clothing (which is not a bad thing) but had little if any sexual interaction with a lover. In the male videos it was quite common for sexy scenes to occur between two lovers. In the Ashanti video men are portrayed as their exotic sex-crazed lover. There was much aggression between the couple, Ashanti and Lorenz Tate, and much passion as well. It actually seemed somewhat realistic in terms of many other videos, because this involved the male cheating, and for that she was very angry. But all ended well, with them together, staying very passionate with each other. The main difference between male and female videos that I noticed was the overuse of sex in male videos and the slight underplay of it in women’s videos. Both liked to use jewels and nice clothing pretty equally, none were very modest about boasting their wealth.

As for how those unfamiliar and ignorant with black culture depicted on the television through these videos?
