The next chapter begins with Henry’s unit leaving the town. They are now headed towards the town of Gorizia, which is farther from the battlefront. Henry explains that Gorizia is much more enjoyable than the previous quarters. The town is not badly damaged and it also is a much more entertaining place for the soldiers. As the men cross a bridge, they notice German bicycle troops. This caused them to turn back to the main road where the retreat is taking place. When they make it to the road the men are shot at and a couple of them are killed. Henry realized that it was the Italian army that was shooting at them thinking they were the enemies.

A Farewell to Arms is a novel that expresses both good and bad things in life. The novel does a great job in explaining situations that one would face during war. A great example of how man has no value for life during war is when Henry shoots the fleeing officer. Hemmingway foreshadows sad events by using rainy days, a classical example of a depressing feeling. The novel shows how although Henry escaped further war, it would always be with him. There is no such thing as a farewell for Henry. Although he should have been content, he still thought about war; it never left his mind. But, when Catherine died, Henry felt as if he had lost everything, his farewell to arms.

Henry then prepares to go back to the front. As he walks down the street he sees Catherine and asks her to join him. They go into a gun shop where Henry buys a gun and ammunition. Henry asks Catherine if she wanted to go somewhere private. They decide on going to a hotel. Catherine feels awkward in doing so yet, on the way she buys a nightgown. After dinner, Henry asks Catherine about how she will take care of the baby. Catherine tells him that she will be fine, and she will have a home ready for them when he gets back.

Later that night, Emilio wakes Henry up from his sleep. He tells Henry that the Police are coming to arrest him tomorrow mourning. Emilio suggests that he take his boat and row to Switzerland. Henry then wakes up Catherine; they pack and head down to the dock. Emilio is there with food and drink. Henry gives him some money and tells Emilio that he will send more once in Switzerland.

The next day, Henry hears of an attack that will take place later on in the night. On his way towards the battle, he asks the driver of the car to stop at the hospital. Henry tells Catherine that he is going to fight. She gives him a metal and wishes him luck. Henry then continues on his way to the battlefront in Pavla.
