Before we can define hip hop, we must first look learn the history of it. The foundatio of hip hop began in Jamaica in the 1940’s and by the 1960’s, it would not be uncommon to find trucks at street corners filled with sound equipent. These trucks played American rhythm and blues for the people of the neighborhood. This later transformed into what we now call hip hop in the mid-to late 1970’s. This phenomenon could be found in the projects of Brooklyn, New York, particularly the Farragut Projects. The DJs (disc jockeys) of the 70’s mostly played disco music back then. It is true that hip hop is all of these things, but it is not limited to them. Hip hop is more that just music and dancing. It is a culture for a movement of revolution. The clothes, the language, the attitude, the actions, the way one walks, talks, and looks are all part of the hip hop culture. And hip hop is not exclusive to African-Americans either. It along with its music are colorless. The clothes and dress of hip hop is very urban and trendy and it is constantly changing. Timberland boots, baseball caps, baggy jeans with the matching jacket, and urban t-shirts are only a few items of the hip ho dress-code. Slang like wuz-up, dun (hello, friend) and peace god, one (good-bye) are only a couple examples of the hip hop language. This language has grown so much that it has developed a politically correct name for it, ebonics. The word ebonics comes from two separate words, ebony and phonics. Earlier I stated that hip hop was a culture for a movement of revolution. I say this because hip hop can be used to rebel or make a statement about an issue. And even though “gangsta rap” has been downed by politicians and some other public figures, “gangsta rap” is the sole reason why some kids are not in the streets selling drugs, robbing and stealing, or killing. Hip hop is their way out. Therefore, hip hop is a provider and it is an occupation, which gives it two more definitions.

But still, what is hip hop? Now that we have the history, let us look at what hip hop consist of. The art form of hip hop consist of deejaying (the cutting and scratching of records), emceeing/rapping, break dancing, and grafitti art. Deejaying is the manipulation of a record over a particular groove in order to produce strange sounds. It was invented by either Grand Master Flash or Grand Wizard Theodore, who were both DJs from the Bronx. Rapping is saying rhymes to the beat of music. It was originally called emceeing.
