In a universe with a perpetual continuum of time, never pausing or breaking stride, eternally moving our lives towards the future, the idea of a sudden end with the death of our bodies defies human logic. And, although there is no scientific way to know what lies in wait after our passing from the earth, it is natural for man to come to the common belief that, even though death is an end, it is not the end. George Bernard Shaw conveys to the reader that his ironic attitude of joy at his mother’s death is based on his belief that her death is not an end but a beginning.
