Matrix Mise-En-Scene
Mise-en-scene is a powerful and important cinematic technique in film. The specific usage of mise-en-scene allows the director to guide the viewer’s attention to a specific focal point so that important details are not missed, and other details can serve as the support of the frame. A scene that shows many effective elements for mise-en-scene is the “White Room” scene of the original Matrix. In this scene the directors, Andy and Larry Wachowski, put to use a minimal setting in a great way. Film scenes often use a wide range of props and background effects to present an image that is interesting to look at. On the other hand, this scene, takes place in a nearly empty and completely white room. In the room are only two chairs, a television, and a table. The two chairs are of red leather with wood on the ends of the arms. In between the two chairs is a television that appears to be from the
fifties. The television does not have a chord, nor does the “White Room” have an electrical outlet. The props show symmetry next to Neo and Mopheous in the foreground. The directors use a limited choice of colors in the scene. The dark colors of the chairs and television offset the complete whiteness of the rest of the room. The room also does not have a horizon line in the background. This gives the viewer a feeling of infinite space. It also gives contrast to the setting that is dropped into the “White Room,” when the setting of the outskirts of New York City replaces the white background. This contrast of setting while staying inside the same scene reinstates the theme of illusion versus reality in the film.
