Oedipus the King

In the pheado written by Plato (427-347 b.c.) Socrates was asked by Plato who was his pupil to define soul and body. Socrates’ answer to this question was that body is “human” and “mortal” and that soul is “divine” and “immortal”. This is important because from Socrates, Plato learned about body and soul and this education was the groundwork for Plato’s philosophy.

Platonic spiritualism is a philosophy founded by Plato that emphasizes soul over body. On the other hand Aristotle (384-322b.c.) was a student under Plato and he embraced body over soul in his personal philosophy. Aristotle’s way of thinking referred to as Aristotelian materialism was the beginning of scientific inquiry and because of this he is referred to as the father of modern science.

The history of Western civilization can be defined as a conflict between the ancient Greek and Roman world. The third great thinker is Albert Einstein (1875-1955). In 1905 Einstein developed the theory of relativity, E=MC squared. This great thinker laid the groundwork for the atomic age.

There are many examples of things going on in the world today that can remind us the fact that we are a materialistic society more than a religious society. Some of these examples are prayer in school, euthanasia, abortion, and the death penalty. All of these example show conflict between mans laws and Gods laws. Crime rate going up is also and example between drugs prostitution and theft it is very easy to see how greedy our society is. One major example is the ongoing battle between the west and Islam. The Christian west is at odds with the Islamic people. The Islamic people believe that we do not take religion serious enough. Many people do not realize that there are over a billion people who belong in the Islamic faith from places ranging from the Middle East, North Africa, port of India, Philippines, and Indonesia which is the largest Islamic country in the w
