The body can no longer use sugar and starches because the pancreas has stopped producing the hormone insulin. As a result, sugar accumulates in the blood and tissues, causing damage or complication in various parts of the body. Medically, this diseased is known as diabetes mellitus, to distinguish it from the very rare diabetes insipidus. Symptoms include excessive urination (sugar in the blood causes kidneys to produce ridiculous amounts of urine), thirst, loss of body mass, ulcers on feet and disturbances of vision.
