Abortion:Pro-Choice
When a person thinks of everyday objects like ants, gunpowder, rocks, coat hangers, or even boiling water, I doubt illegal abortions comes to mind. But those were the ways to abort a child back in the day when abortion was not legal and women had to resort to the “back-alley” doctors. Women who have had illegal abortions remember the “dirty conditions, pain because of no anesthesia, the shame and guilt, the break up of their relationship, the ‘grinding’ and ‘snipping’ noises, and the squirting of blood and fluids” (Emmens 95). I believe that abortion should be legal because it is wrong to take away the rights to choose from a woman with her own mind and place a life-changing decision on the few cells of a fetus. The right to privacy, whether it be founded in the Fourteenth Amendment’s concept of personal liberty and restrictions upon state action or in the Ninth Amendment’s reservation of the rights of the people, is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy. (Terkel 31) There are many reasons why a woman would want to have an abortion. The majority is women who are too young, unmarried and/or not stable enough to support a baby. Others have been raped or i
In the case of teenagers, abortion is extremely difficult to obtain on demand. One million teens get pregnant each year, but only 35% have an abortion. In some states, there are laws that say a minor must have permission of at least one parent, sometimes both parents, to go through with the abortion. These laws try to make teen girls communicate with their parents, but usually they only worsen the situation. For example, if a young woman gets pregnant and feels that she cannot tell her parents, she must go through a “judicial bypass” to override the consent of her parents, and have the court decide if she is mature enough to make her own decision. Most teenagers don’t have the time or means to get to a court hearing or have the emotional strength to get through one. Also, the proceeding usually take a few weeks, which the girl has to wait, and the additional time can make an abortion more hazardous and more expensive, if she is granted one by the court (Terkel 35). One of the safest procedures is an abortion, as long as a medically trained doctor does it legally. An abortion can be done in two ways, medically or surgically. A medical abortion is done by taking a drug, known as misprostol, along with another pill, either methotrexate or mifepristone, which together induces the abortion. It is done without entering the uterus and can be done as soon as a woman knows she is pregnant. This procedure is always done before the eighth week of pregnancy. If a woman is more than eight weeks along, her only option is to have a surgical abortion. During a surgical abortion, the fetus is removed from the uterus before it has the ability to live outside the womb. It is one of the safest procedures done today. Less than 1% of woman who have had abortions have major complications after the surgery (prochoice.org). The women who have abortions are usually between the ages of 16 to 34. The majority (89%) of abortions are done in
