Gender Role Socialization:

Over time, gender roles change. How quickly the changes occur is the question. There have been many huge cultural advances during this century. Over the past one hundred years, the world has fought in two global wars, industry has replaced agriculture as the major means of survival, and the speed of life has increased due to technology. Given the huge change in the world we live in, have our ideas about gender roles changed at the same pace? I believe that even though the world has changed greatly, gender roles have not changed at quite the same pace. First, I will introduce my test subjects, then explain how life conditions, family roles, work roles, decision authority, and work choices affected their gender socialization roles, and finally offer conclusions found in the interviews.

My first interview subject was Homer. Homer grew up on a family farm in Tye, Texas during the 1930’s. Homer’s family was poor, and he spent a lot of his time during his elementary and middle school years working, instead of going to school, or playing with friends. When the crops needed to be planted or harvested, he would stay home from school to work. The family was also very strong, because they were not many other people available
