A director is known as a person who supervises the creative aspects of a dramatic production or film and instructs the actors and crew. In any regard, the director is probably the most important person responsible for creating movie magic and mixing together all the ingredients of the film-making process. There is an idea that the director is the primary author or voice of a movie and through a director's film, we see one person's way of viewing the world. One that has the potential to change the way we see the world. This theory also holds that the how of a film, for example mise en scene, is something under the director's control. Elements or features include the action, composition, sets, props, lighting, costumes, make-up, cinematographic style and technique, and visual properties. These things are more important than the genre or subject of the film. www.dictionary.com (Internet dictionary) (09/09/2003)With only a handful of credits to his name, David Fincher became one of the most talked-about American directors to emerge during the late 1990s. Originally hailing from Denver, where he was born in 1962, Fincher began making movies at the age of eight and, particularly inspired by the work of George Lucas, landed his first
Fincher encourages us to change the way we view film. Fincher’s films contain elements that play with typical conventions to make the audience question the reality being presented. His creative techniques prove he is not interested in making films for mere entertainment. Whether he intends to be postmodern or not, his visual forms encourage a more mature viewing over mere mindless consumption. Tyler Durden questions the motives behind the media; David Fincher wishes his audience would do the same. Some of Fincher’s most interesting metafictional choices include his use of traditionally non-entertainment and non-fiction forms such as news analyst Daniel Schorr’s appearance in The Game and the furniture catalog layout of Jack’s apartment in Fight Club. Daniel Schorr appears on TV as himself, becomes part of the movie’s fiction when he addresses Michael Douglas’ character, then becomes himself again. The boundary between the film and real world dissolves for a moment. Fight Club becomes playfully aware of itself as a fabrication when Ed Norton’s character unrealistically walks among the catalog text in his apartment. Also when he directly addresses the audience, when Tyler points to a change-over cue and when Fincher includes the subliminal pornographic splices in Fight Club itself and not only in the films Tyler builds up. Jack sums up the film’s self-reflexivity when he describes an effect of his insomnia: "Everything’s a copy of a copy of a copy." www.filmvault.com (Movie page) (09/09/2003) major industry job ten years later at Lucas' own Industrial Lights and Magic(ILM). After his four-year stint at ILM, during which he worked on such productions as Return of the Jedi (1983) and Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984), Fincher created commercials and music videos for the likes of Aerosmith, Paula Abdul and Madonna. www.blainandchan.fsnet.co.uk (Fan page) (09/09/2003) David Fincher is a young director with a unique film style that he has made
