Safety Behind School Walls

One of the biggest questions that we ask ourselves when we send our kids into schools are whether or not they are safe. We tend to compare the United States to Canada when deciphering whether or not our kids are out of harm's way while receiving an education. Being in Canada we like to think that our kids are protected by violence in schools, but are they? This raises another critical question, which will be the main focus here. Are the Canadian youth gangs and the school violence in Canada starting to emulate the gangs and violence within schools throughout the United States in their structure and severity of their impact on society? Evidence has shown that Canada is indeed starting to emulate youth gangs and violence in the United States. It is important to understand what this all means before deciphering whether or not our youth is safe.

In order to understand the definition of the question at hand, the terms will be dissected and defined individually. Firstly, “youths” are defined, and generally known as people between the ages of eleven and twenty-one. Once the term “youth” is connected with the term “gang” a new, and somewhat scarier definition arises – people between the ages of eleven an

d twenty-one who associate together or act as an organized body especially for criminal purposes. After establishing the meaning of “youth gangs” we come to learn that it only gets worse. Youth gangs in “society,” is the same as saying “youth gangs in a community in which people live become educated and settle down in.” Now that it is understood what we are dealing against, we need to know what kind of life we are leading, and more importantly how to protect our kids. Only when the severity of the task at hand is understood will people work towards resolving it and making society a better place for our kids and us. In order to examine whether society is a safe or dangerous place, issues such as: what is happening in our schools, the culture behind the gangs, the portrayal of gangs by the media, and what exactly happens once in gangs, will be exclusively focused on and answered. On top of that, if the hypothesis that school violence and gangs are becoming a dangerous threat to kids, teachers, and society as a whole proves true; some ideas and suggestions on how us, as agents, in an able bodied and healthy minded society can stop school violence and youth gangs. This study is going to be limited strictly to gangs in the United States and in Canada. It will only focus on youths, and all research information will not be older than ten years.

In slums such as the Bronx or the very worst case, Compton, children will no doubt be beaten and robbed if they do not join a gang. Of course they can probably get the same treatment from rivals when in a gang. The gang also provides some money for these children who quite often need to feed their families. Although this would be hard to compare with many cities in Canada, at the very least, the lowest income areas in Canada are home to such gangs and violence. Any low-income area will undoubtedly have these gangs acting as fenders for their peers and families.

The first thing to consider is why people become part of a gang? On the surface peer pressure and greed cause gangs, but when focusing on the issue in more depth, there are more motives behind the existence of gangs. Many teens in gangs will pressure peers into becoming part of a gang by making it all sound glamorous. For instance, in lower income families with many children, or upper-middle class families where parents are always working, the children often feel deprived of love. The parents of such families feel as though putting food on the table is providing enough love for their children. However, there are consequences to this lack of child understanding. Children of these families may often join a gang as a result of boredom and them feeling as if they will now belong to something. As time goes on, a form of love or kinship develops between the gang members and the child. It is then that the bond between the kid and the gang is completed as the gang has effectively taken the place of the family. This

Furthermore, it is crucial to see how youth gangs and school violence common amongst Canadian and U.S cities. Paul Palango found that the Ottawa street scene, upon which he focussed his article, was a typical example of how Canada and the U.S are similar. In both countries many violent gangs arose out of nowhere (1997:18) R. Gary Edwards and Josephine Mazzuca found, after conducting a survey in 1998, that most Canadians find youth gangs are becoming more serious. They found that 43% of the people polled believed that the number of gangs has increased, 32% believed that the numbers remained the same, and only 15% think t
