On February 19th of 1426 Massacio agreed to paint an altarpiece called the Crucifixion. This painting was very vibrant and showed many new techniques developed during the renaissance. One characteristic of a renaissance painting shown was the use of shadow and light. The man who was kneeling down to Jesus on the Crucifix used this method of painting and the other people in the painting to show the sun was behind them because of where there shadows were in the painting, this technique gave the painting more realism. In addition this painting represents the renaissance by the use of bright colors in which was used to express the mood of the painting which was exciting and thoughtful. It also used real people in real settings because it showed Jesus who was a real man who lived during this time and this might have been where he was crucified. Also this painting uses the characteristics of renaissance by using classical references. This was used buy the dome shape in which is behind Jesus. Also this painting represents a dramatic and interesting scene because this is remarkable event because it was where the supposed messiah in the Catholic Church dies. In addition this painting shows the technique of representing a human body that shows the study of human anatomy. This was shown by the indents on Jesus" chest to show his muscles, joints and bones. Also this painting uses the renaissance idea of realistic details from nature, this is shown by the wall because you can tell the wall isn't flat but has indents and cracks as it would look like if the person looking at the painting were there.
