With the Montreal Expos, a major league baseball team, looking to move out of its city, the main two targets have become Portland, OR, and Washington D.C. The move to Portland would require money, a new stadium, and fan support through bad and good times. The city of Portland is not a rich city and is not growing in population. They already own a professional basketball team which is headed downhill with over-priced players. Portland does not have enough fans, money, or the patience to develop a successful baseball team. First, the Northwestern States of Oregon and Washington already own a Major League Baseball team, the Seattle Mariners. Second, the baseball team Portland would receive what happens to be one of the worst teams in baseball. The Expos will be losing their best player this off-season due to free agency and do not have enough firepower to become competitive this season. They are a very young team and in a few years could only be a better than average team. However, to win fans over in Portland, they will need to win immediately. One of the advantages of a new location is that the new town is full of excitement for a new team. This excitement leads to high attendance for the first year. If the Expos don’t have a successful season the first year, then the city of Portland will lose this enthusiasm for the team and fail to produce the attendance needed to make a profit.
