Macbeth

In the play Macbeth by William Shakespeare, and the great Japanese flick, The Throne of Blood, there were many differences. Although, the main points covered in the play were also covered in the movie, there were a lot of different things added or left out because of the culture difference between the play and the movie. Most of the differences that I found were in the setting, camera techniques, editing, casting, sound and visual effects.

One of the biggest differences I noticed was the setting. In the play, the setting took place on the battlefields of Scotland. The movies setting took place somewhere in Japan. Although these two places have quite different terrain, tree’s and other plant life, the Japanese director of the movie made it seem like that was the way it was supposed to be. Also, the buildings were very different. The only building used in the play was the Globe Theater. They only needed to use this one building to get the point they wanted across to the viewers. If they wanted to they could paint backgrounds and settings onto wood or make them out of cloth and put them up behind the actors to get the audience into the mood they wanted them to be in. This is one of the many benefits of having movies a

nd technology to be able to videotape the whole background and scenery because then you know for sure what is going on and you don’t have to try to develop your own mental picture of the scenery. The buildings in the movie were a lot different than the buildings than are traditionally thought of in the play Macbeth. They were smaller one story building with basically one main room in them with a few others possibly branching off.

The last big difference I noticed were the sound and visual effects. In the play there weren’t any sound effects (except those by Cole Duren) or any visual effects. In the real version of the play it was possible that they may have had some music or maybe some tricks to make things seem realistic as they did in some plays’ however, I am unsure of any they may have used in the play Macbeth. In the movie I don’t believe they used many visual effects either. Since the movie was made in nineteen fifty four, I think that they were just happy to be filming their movie and not acting it out on stage as a play. The only visual effects that there was that I noticed was when the Japanese character for Banquo’s ghost came back and the Japanese character for Macbeth tried to fight him and scared everyone because they thought he was crazy.
