What Is Behind This Propaganda Mess?Advertisements are a part of every one persons’ life; there is no easy way to escape it. It embodies our whole economy and everything inside of it. It is only natural that it would, because economy as a whole is based upon money. Money is the power behind propaganda! Without money there would be no need for one to advertise a product. What’s in the word propaganda? It is defined as any wide spread scheme or effort to spread or promote an idea. In the world today companies go to great lengths to succeed in promoting a specific idea in attempts to get people to buy their product. Each day a normal person is flooded with images from magazines, television, internet ads, and radio commercials. It is said that the common U.S. citizen is “exposed to over five hundred advertising claims of various types each day (McClintock, 305).” The sad thing is it is expected to increase as the years go by. It is known that propaganda affects everyone but how does it exactly succeed in influencing these people’s minds? There are seven different types of propaganda and each pertains to a different aspect of trickery. The media take every manipulative mechanism possible to trick the mind in believi
ng that it must trust in what it says. Companies go to great lengths to achieve this. They use various techniques such as bandwagon, name calling and transfer to succeed. In the business of hair color the competition is rough. Nowadays hair coloring is something that is as common as putting make-up on. Different companies use different techniques to differentiate themselves from the competition. It is a hard world in the field of advertising; you must be persuasive enough to win! In promoting these hair colors the companies used four very powerful and effective methods to get through to their preferred audience: testimonial, glittering generalities, card-stacking, and plain folks. All of these methods intertwine to form of desire in the minds it reaches. It is so comforting when people can relate themselves to the image that is playing before them on the television. It is a feeling of self worth and pride. It also can be explained as plain folks. This technique uses the phrase “we’re all in the same boat” to toy with society’s emotions ( McClintock, 308). In the Loreal Feria commercial we witness a young, beautiful model promoting a slogan of “because you’re worth it.” This commercial is targeted towards women and implants the thought of self-pampering. This technique seems to be the most worth while. A woman watching this commercial who has successfully been pulled in will think to her self ‘if she is worth it then I most positively am too.” For the female gender this type of advertisement is very talented for achieving success in the market. Producers create commercials with celebrities in hopes that society will go out and buy the product to be just like that one celebrity. Society today emphasizes so much on celebrities and the beauty they have. It doesn’t seem to process in ones mind that make-up artists can do wonders. Hair products are a perfect example of this.
