John Quincy Adams

Throughout the time period 1400 and 1919 there were many people who greatly impacted American history with their various contributions to this nation. John Quincy Adams was one of those people. Many people think of John Quincy Adams as just the sixth president of the United States, but really he was a lot more than just that. He impacted American history not just through his presidency, but during the time of him being a diplomat, a statesman, the secretary of state and a congressman.

In 1775, the early part of John Quincy Adams’ life he witnessed the Battle of Bunker Hill and the burning of Charlestown across the bay. This made a long impression on him. In July of 1781, at the age of 14, John Quincy Adams left for St. Petersburg as secretary to Francis Dana, who was recently appointed Minister of Russia. Then, in August, he arrived in St. Petersburg to start his 14-month stay as secretary. He played a key role because Francis Dana spoke no French, while he mastered at it. Also, he aided the French Ambassador, Marquis de Verac with English because she did not know this language.

After a year of studying for Harvard, he was admitted to the school as a member of the Junior class. On July 16, 1787, after only 2 years, he graduated from Harvard being second in his class. At his graduation ceremony, he gave a graduation address on “The Importance and Necessity of Public Faith to the Well-Being of a Nation.” Not only did this show how he was very intelligent, but it also showed how quick he was at learning and how bright he was. This speech at graduation was then printed in the “Columbian Magazine” and became the subject of some newspaper criticism and controversy.

November 11th, 1795 he arrived in London to help with the final ratifications of the Jay Treaty. Then in 1796, he was nominated by George Washington to the Minister Plenipoteniary of Portugal. In July of 1797, he received information from his father that had said he changed his appointment from Portugal to Prussia. In November of that year, he arrived there and began his duties. ON the 11th of July 1799, he signed the Prussian-American Maritime treaty.

In 1793, on April 24th, John Q. Adams began “Marcellus” articles. These articles called for the neutrality of the United States in the British-French War. In these articles, he argued that the change in the French Government pardoned the United States of the treaty obligations. These articles caught the attention of President George Washington.
