“The Prodigal Son” vs. “De Progicul Son”
Someone who is prodigal is given to wasteful luxury or extravagance. This profuse behavior is seen in “The Prodigal Son“, by James Weldon Johnson and “De Progicul Son“, by John Henry Faulk, which is the view from an African American perception. The two literary works make known the importance of learning a lesson the hard way. People often do not understand why they should listen to their parents or guardian until the lesson is learned. In the Prodigal Son it states that the man didn't have a name, but his name is God Almighty, and that he had two sons, neither of which had a name. In this poem these two young men are never called by a name, only referred to as young man or younger son. The younger son decided it was time to leave his fathers' house, therefore, he took his part of his father's goods. He left home and ended up in Babylon. In The Prodigal Son they were never given names but called by a title to identify them, while on the other hand in The Prodical Son, they were all given names, Lawd, Jesus, and Adam. In both narratives the younger sons were the ones to leave home, party themselves out, forget about the lord, and run crawling back home to their fathers, both whom had open arms when their child returned. In the Prodigal Son, the son went to Babylon, and in the Progicul Son, the son went to Pahradise. Both sons left their house looking for a more exciting life than what they had, but both in turn found that not everybody loves you like your family. In De Progicul Son it states the man was called a suhtun man. “A suhtun man was a special man. Therefore he mus' of been writin' about de Lawd. The suhtun man had two sons, and the only two the lord ever had was Adam and Jesus.” Jesus was the older son and didn’t have a problem working for his father, nor did he ever complain.
