A Veiw From the Bridge

Dramatic Scenes in a View from the Bridge

‘A view from the Bridge’ deals with a longshoreman by the name of Eddie Carbone that works on the docks of New York. When Eddie’s Wife’s cousins arrive illegally from Italy Eddie cares and looks after them in his home. The cousin’s names are Marco and Rodolpho one of them is tall, dark haired, olive skinned and well built, Marco; whereas Rodolpho is average height, light blonde hair, light skinned and loves to sing and dance. Rodolpho falls for Eddie’s niece Catherine and she feels the same way for him. Eddie however is jealous, for he feels strongly for Catherine and wants her to himself; this jealousy and uncontrollable possessiveness pushes him to inform the immigration bureau about the two immigrants. Before this desperate act there are many dramatic scenes… A significant moment occurs at the start of ‘A View from the Bridge’ when Alfieri (Eddie’s lawyer) makes his soliloquy saying:

“Oh, there were here who were justly shot by unjust men. Justice is very important here.”

Here the play is introduced with Alfieri centre stage explaining the area that he lives in and what the Sicilian people are like and there background. Alfieri’s position in the p

Later, Beatrice confronts Catherine because she has something important to say about the way Catherine acts around Eddie and how for a girl that age it’s not normal to have such an intimate relationship with your uncle at her age. This point is brought out best when Beatrice says…

“Frankie Yale was cut precisely in half by a machine gun.” Here the audience gets it first violent scenario which also involves the law and justice. The audience has been given an immediate impression that the law, justice and violence will be introduced later in the play in some form or another.

“That he should let you go. But you see, If only I tell him he thinks I’m just bawlin’ him out, or maybe I’m jealous or somethin” Beatrice is talking to Cathy while Eddie is away so in a sense she talking about Eddie behind his back. The point Beatrice is trying to convey to Catherine is that she’s getting to be a grown woman but the way she acts around Eddie is like a young school girl in love and Beatrice is trying to suggest that this is not normal. Also Beatrice is trying to tell Catherine to be a little more independent to go out a bit more meet new people instead of staying in and fussing over Eddie as if he wasn’t capable of doing the things himself. In what Beatrice is saying there is a huge element of jealousy that Catherine does not see. Beatrice feels that Eddie pays more attention to Catherine then herself as he is always around her, always asking her look after him and always looking out for Catherine in the way she acts, dresses and talks. The audience can see this when Eddie says

“Now we settle for half,” meaning now it is becoming more common to settle disputes through the court of law. Alfieri sounds experienced in his working the sense that he has had or seen many cases of violence in the past we get this impression from him saying,

Eddie, Beatrice and Catherine begin to be seated for dinner when Catherine brings up a discussion on the two immigrants and what they should say if anyone asks who they are Eddie suddenly replies with:
