John Cheever and Raymond Carver
While growing up I did not know my father all that well. I went over to his house on weekends, only to get a babysitter while he went to the bar. I would wait for him to get home so I could make sure that he was alright. But usually when he did come home he was unable to walk and was not exactly in the talkative mood. It was hard to learn a lot about my father, and very hard to respect him. But now that I am older, I realize that I was just trying to find some way to relate with him and his life. I feel that John Cheever and Raymond Carver also had this same feeling. They both wanted to relate with their fathers to try to understand why they were the way they were, why they did not care for them like they should have when they were younger, and why they were not part of their lives during their adulthood. John Cheever and Raymond Carver had very difficult fathers. John’s father was a very high class man that needed everything to be perfect and would allow nothing else. While on the other hand Raymond’s father was a very low class man who needed nothing other than his job and a little money. But even though these fathers seem to be exact opposites, both John and Raymond did not understand why their fathers were the
Another thing that a person wonders is why their father did not care for them when they were younger. This is a tough question to ask yourself when your father has abandoned you or never paid much attention to you when you were younger. I believe that John and Raymond also had this thought in the back of their minds. John was confused because his father left him when he was young and Raymond was confused because his father never gave him the time of day when he was a child. Many children who face this problem usually blame themselves. They start to wonder what they did wrong that made their fathers not want to be around them. For this reason John met his father and was hoping for an answer and Raymond watched his father closely hoping to understand why he was unappreciated. But even with this they were unable to get the closure that they needed. After John talked to his father he left it at that, but Raymond took it one step further. He started to run his life like his father did. He worked night and day and often tried to drink himself to sleep. He believed that this in some way would help him understand his father. He was hoping by relating with his father he would find some kind of understanding of why he did not spend time with him as a child. But even with this he was unable to find reason. All John and Raymond really wanted was to feel needed by their fathers. They wanted to have the normal father- son relationship like every other kid. They wanted to go fishing, hunting, and experience the many activities that a normal family does
