Assembly of a Hero

To many people, a hero may be a comic book figure, the best football player or the most popular musician. But to some, a hero may be a person long since dead, such as the quiet engineer, Henry Ford. Henry Ford’s craftsmanship, mechanical ability, determination, vision, and generosity built a legend in automobile manufacture. He began a revolution in transportation. Many were to follow, but his craftsmanship remained of the highest standard.

Craftsmanship was the basis of Ford’s automobiles, as shown in the delicate work of the first cars. “Ford’s crafting style was beyond anything in its time”(Italia 33). Ford’s styling surpassed any other carmaker in his day, because his talent and artistic ability was the greatest of that era. Ford knew what he was doing, showing that he was an automotive hero in the making. “It is without a doubt the greatest creation in automobiles ever placed before people”(Italia 34). A car dealer said this of the Model T, Ford’s greatest accomplishment. His craftsmanship and regard for the working class shows a pure example of a hero. “But Henry Ford did make the decision to adopt the process. And in doing so, Ford became an American hero”(Italia 36). The author speaks o

The ability to see what is needed before it’s needed is a trait that not very many people possess as Ford did. “’The way to make automobiles is to make one automobile like another automobile,’ Ford said, ‘to make them all alike, to make them come through the factory all alike, just as one pin is like another when it comes from a pin factory. If you freeze the design and concentrate on production, as the volume goes up, the cars are certain to become cheaper. I mean to turn out a car that workingmen can buy’”(Italia 34). Ford was thinking in a way of efficiency, a way that nobody else was. He was visioning a new era of production, in a way that only a hero could. His heroic way of giving back to the community gave the public a car to drive. “The Model T was a pioneer”(Italia 40). Ford was speaking of his car, but without Ford there would have been no Model T. Ford was a pioneer, a visionary in the automotive industry. “Still in the day of the horse-drawn carriage, onlookers took a skeptical view of Henry Ford and his first gasoline-powered vehicle”(Italia 32). Even when others criticized him, Ford knew that his machine would one day be the biggest thing to hit America. It is that vision that changed Ford’s life-and America- forever. His heroic foresight helped him shape his company into the largest in the world. His grand visions did not corrupt him, as he was a very generous man.

Ford’s mechanical skills were exemplary, as shown in the durability of his autos. “Machinery fascinated Henry, and his mother called him a ‘born mechanic’”(Kent 7). Ford possessed exceptional mechanical skills, including the ability to design and build his own
