Civil War

Just think about a war in which over 600,000 American lives are lost on American soil because of nothing more or less than a difference in opinion. Well…that is exactly why the Civil War took place. The war was fought within the United States between the Union (North) and the Confederacy (South) beginning in 1861 and finally ending in 1865. In this paper I wish to discuss the who, what, when, where, and why of before, during, and after the Civil War.

There were many differences between the two sides economically, politically, and socially but all of these discrepancies were because of slavery.

Economically the south depended on agriculture rather than industrialization because of the production of cotton. After the Cotton Gin was invented, southerners felt the need for more slaves to keep the “money-maker” of the south alive. The South was able to produce 7/8 of the world’s supply of cotton. They also helped with the cultivation of tobacco, rice, and indigo. Therefore the need for slavery seemed to be more overwhelming than before. In a time period of approximately fifty years the south went from 1.1 million slaves to 4.0 million slaves. However the north relied more on industrialization. They used factories and other

On April 6-7, 1862 the Confederates surprise attack General Ulysses Grant at Shiloh, Tennessee. Approximately 13,000 Union soldiers are killed and 10,000 wounded on the first day, but when the reinforcements arrive overnight for the Union, the battle is turned around the Confederate forces lost 11,000 of their men. Grant is relieved. Later in April seventeen Union ships move to the Mississippi River and take New Orleans.

April 12, 1861 at 4:30 am Confederates under General Pierre Beauregard start the war with the firing of fifty cannons upon Fort Sumter in Charleston, South Carolina. Fort Sumter eventually is surrendered. In mid April Virginia becomes a part of the Confederacy and half becomes West Virginia and they become a member of the Union.

Before all of the fussing and arguing got too bad many attempts of compromises to try to keep both the north and south happy occurred. I would like to go into a few of those acts and compromises that failed leading to the actual declaration of war.

Technologically, weapon advancements were made quickly with short period s of time. For instance, we developed the first iron sights, submarines, and stopped using soft bullets. We went from a wooden ship to and ironclad. Amazing advances were made and it was all in a war that we fought between ourselves.

January 1, 1863, President Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation that frees all slaves in Confederate states and encourages them to enlist into the Union army.

Nothing really happens until December when the Battle of Fredericksburg occurs. After defeating Lee at Antietam, Lee defeats the new general for the Army of Potomac, Ambrose E. Burnside, and his army is a number of attacks. General Joseph Hooker replaces Burnside.
