Ethnography
A typical day in this office starts and ends with a short and very brief meeting. They discuss the agendas for the day, the targets that need to be followed and the things to be done by each employee. It is not a big corporation so everybody really has to share their own load of duties and to focus intensely to accomplish the company’s goal. When it reaches the end of the month, all the staff and employees gather together for a very long meeting to discuss and review the company’s objectives. After a dreadful and long meeting, employees usually go back to their own lives and continue working. They get a coffee and go back to their hefty office table filled with big volume of papers waiting to be accomplished at the end of the day. But then, there are also these people who just stay in the room after the meeting and just hang out, too tired to go back with their own busy lives. Charlton, Jean and Ray, three Filipino employees, usually stay after the meeting. They have been friends for almost a year. They have developed within them a community who “likes to stay” in the room after the meeting. After reading Heath’s analysis on Ways With Words, the communities that Heath used shred a new insight in the use of conversatio
Jean. Why? I thought your old computer is still working. Jean. It’s F.O.R. (Full Operations Review) here next week. Ray. Oh! Okay! I don’t want to miss that!!! You know what? This is my fourth F.O.R. this year. I’m actually planning to complete the five F.O.R. so, two more to go! Charlton. Hey Ray! Can you work on Thursday next week? Charlton. Actually, she will be expecting you to be here. These guys, being men, certainly have their own way of conversation. From the way they talk to what they talk about, they have clearly shown their own style. Their conversation tends to be more male-oriented. The setting also played a key role in the conversation that took place. Being enclosed in four walls enabled them to concentrate on each other. In Heath’s Ways With Words, Heath observed that in Roadville, the “stories are told only in sex-segregated groups” (150). This pertains precisely to the community of the three men. They have segregated themselves with the opposite sex which will obviously enable them to talk more about “guy stuff.” To be an “insider” in this conversation, a person must also have a greater knowledge with computers to be able to relate in the same length with these men. It’s almost certain that the guys are talking about Charlton’s dilemma of buying a computer. They are primarily discussing the topic on what had happened on Charlton’s old computer and the suggestions in which how he’ll be able to buy a new one. Charlton mentioned terms like “Pentium 4,” “20 Gb storage capacity,” and “New programs and software.” All of these pertain to a person’s knowledge in the world of Computers. It is of primary requisite to gain knowledge of all these things to become an “insider” to the conversation. Charlton also implied, “Some other stuff, you know what I mean.” In saying these words, it is clearly perceived as “guy stuff” and insider knowledge for both Jean and Ray.
