He was the son of Earl Little, a Baptist teacher, and his wife, Louise. Earl Little was an outspoken promoter of social and economic independence for blacks and a supporter of the “ Back to Africa” movement of Black Nationalist leader Marcus Garvey. Shortly after Malcolm was born, his family moved to Lansing, Michigan. In 1929, their house was firebombed by racists while the whole Little family was in the house asleep. After about four years of living on the streets, he was thrown in jail on a charge of theft. He had been there before, but this time he was going to be there a while. While he was there, he, as some would say, saw the light. Thanks to his brothers he became enthralled in the Islamic religion.
