I will be discussing Modern Art in general but a large section will be focused on Conceptual Art as I’ve “discovered” a flaw in a few of the principles of Conceptual Art. I will back up my statements with reasons of my thoughts.

What is Concept Art and Conceptual Art?

Before I begin, I thought I should clarify the difference between the two. There seems to be a difference when it comes to the two different categories. Conceptual Art relies on the actual idea to make art (i.e. the idea is the art). The artist makes use of all sorts of props at his disposal to make something that will convey his idea. Although this form of art is an interesting “idea”, I feel that most of the works that come from it are made to be controversial or shocking or weird. I’m pretty sure there’s good conceptual art out there, but I don’t think I’ll be willing to pay for it.

Can Conceptual Artists (or Modern Artists) Draw??

It would be interesting to see or know if a person like Kendall Geers can draw or not. The reason I ask this is because it takes many years to master a craft such as drawing. When a person spends so many years mastering a craft, and then decides to do things “differently”, there must be a very good reason for doing so. Picasso was a very talented traditional artist during his early years but decided to turn to the other direction when he found out traditional art was dead. This can be explainable. But what about the other Modern Artists? Are they just doing this because they can’t draw? Or maybe it’s simply because I don’t understand Modern art. Or maybe it’s just a big deception that started many years ago and is still going on today.

With the explosion and popularity of 3D Animation, the need for traditional art skills is increasing as people are starting to realise its importance. A friend of mine has told me that “we are going in circles…” He explains this notion with this little theory of his: “Tens of thousands of years ago, man was naked. Then man started to cover their important parts with animal skin. Just several hundred years ago, man covered themselves from head to toe. Today, we see topless ladies tanning on the beaches…”
