The second largest town in France, Marseille is renowned for its friendly atmosphere, beautiful beaches and its lovely summer weather. Situated in the Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur (PACA) region it is set around a twenty-six century old port with a dynamic downtown, large parks, excellent shopping and delicious seafood.
Marseilles is an ancient but metro town with its Parisian-style division into "arrondissements" (districts).
Marseille was started by the Phoenician in around 600-BC (ignoring the Ligurians who already lived there), taken over by the Greeks in 540 BC, and conquered by the Romans two thousand years ago, it is full of sites and artefacts displaying it’s diverse history.
