Layers in a Legend

The middle ages are known for Arthurian legends; one of the most circulated of these legends is Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The poem begins at Christmastide in King Arthur’s court. Arthur’s desire for a tale is met by the unexpected Green Knight. The Green Knight begs to exchange blows with one of the round table’s Knights; Sir Gawain volunteers to initiate the challenge this year and to accept the Green Knight’s response the follow year at the Green Knight’s castle. Gawain severs the Green Knight’s head only to watch the body pick it up and continue. Gawain later sets forth on his quest for the Green Knight’s castle and he rests at Bercilak’s castle where he celebrates for three days with his newly met host, the host’s young wife, and an old lady. As his host hunt’s daily, so does the host’s wife; Gawain becomes prey whose chivalry is tested. For two days, Gawain surpasses the trials of the host’s wife. On the third day, Gawain is offered the Green Knight’s magical belt; Gawain falls to this temptation. The day comes for Gawain to again meet the Green Knight and Gawain is met with a blow for each temptation at his prior host’s. The first two blows do not make contact while the third only sc

The poem continues to explain the forth point of the pentangle as representing the Virgin Mary’s five joys: annunciation, nativity, resurrection, ascension, and assumption. (Lines 676-7) The fifth and final point of the pentangle represents the traits a knight must posses. (Lines 651-5) While the significance of the number five is more obvious, both of the relevant numbers in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight add value to the poem through symbolism.

Like any other Arthurian legend, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight contains a code, a quest, battles, magic, and tests. Beyond the action and adventure of this story are several layers of meaning. By examining the significance of colors and numbers in this poem, one can begin to understand the layers of symbolism in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.
