How Much Did FDR Know?

On December 7, 1941, at approximately eight in the morning, the Japanese attacked the United States Naval base at Pearl Harbor. Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto led this surprise attack. Within two hours Japan had either sunk or damaged twenty-one of the United States Pacific Fleet. The most shocking aspect of it all was that many people believed that Franklin D. Roosevelt knew about a possible attack before it happened. So the question is what did FDR know and when did he know it.

Robert B. Stinnet, the author of Day of Deceit, was angered when he found out the secrets that had been hidden from America, but he understood the position that FDR was in, which was being forced to have isolationist America join the war. FDR knew that many lives would be lost if they joined the war. After researching this horrific event he found papers that outlined the deliberate steps that were planned to bring forth the action that forced America into the war.

Why, after the interest he had taken in sending of a message on November 26, did President Roosevelt do nothing on the night of December 6 to assure that Admiral Kimmel and General Short were informed of the receipt of the message, which “meant war”? The only possible conclusion again is because he did not want those Commanders to be informed that the war was only hours away. 6

I strongly believe that Roosevelt and his men should have alerted the Commanders at Hawaii before the attack. I think that Roosevelt used this attack to get America into the war. Although, I don’t believe that he knew how severe the attack would actually be. This holding back of information was unfair to Kimmel and Short and the whole Naval Fleet. If Japan found out that the United States knew what they were up to, then Roosevelt should have thought of another way to enter the war. All those lives were lost just so we could enter World War Two. I don’t believe all of the blocks of perceptions. I think that there were enough warnings to alert the United States of a possible attack. There is enough evidence that shows that Roosevelt knew what was going to happen months before it did. Although the Allies won the war, Pearl Harbor was an enormous Intelligence error that will haunt American’s lives forever. These unsung heroes were let down. They had no cover and they quickly tried to get ready and fight back. They had no idea what was going to happen, they were not given a chance to do what they joined the US Navy for. Japan started ripping this Naval Base apart right from the beginning. This secrecy was morally wrong and unjust.
