The “Age of McCarthyism-A Brief History with Documents” by Ellen Scherecker is an essay on the history of the McCarthyism, a term which described the extensive accusations, and investigations of speculated communist activities during the 1950’s in the United States. Ellen Scherecker explains the political history of the early stages of McCarthyism as it relates to a partisan struggle for power in the US government. Also she portrays the McCarthy era as a more complicated story that forces us to confront difficult questions about the role of ideology, the power of the state, and the nature of modern American society. The novel used many new documents, which dealt with the espionage that took place during the Second World War when the United States and the Soviet Union were allies.Additionally, Schrecker analyze how the New Deal attack backfired and helped to develop an attack on the communist who ran some of the programs and the congress of industrial Organizations. Furthermore, Schrecker discusses the involvement of the “ anti-Communist,” which used the black listing as a way to fire people who were involved in the government procedures. In “The Age of McCarthyism” Schrecker explains the objective of the book, which was to help to explain the McCarthyism era with selections from some of the documents that shaped it. In addition, Schrecker wanted narrower interpretations that identified what happened only with the bizarre antics of senator McCarty or the inquisitorial tactics of a few congressional committees, which do not explain why the anti-Communist furor came to dominate the American political life during the early years of the cold war, but a broader investigation, which invites controversy (Schrecker v). For instance, in chapter 5, Schrecker explains how the committee, the FBI, and the chambers worked together with the rest of the anti-Communist network to find witnesses, develop leads, and keep the pressure on the administration (Schrecker 36). In addition in working together with the anti-Communist network, it also explains that without the participation of the private division, McCarthyism would not have affected the rank-and-file members of the communist movement nor so effectively stifled political dissent. In “The Age of McCarthyism” Schrecker is trying to argue that McCarthyism was not a development of one event, but was a consummation of the fear of Communism in the states, communist having power, and political developments in the world that were seen through propaganda.
