Miami Beach Fitness Festival Special Event Critique
Miami Beach Fitness Festival CritiqueFor the purposes of this assignment, I chose to attend the Miami Beach Fitness Festival, which was held on South Beach between the dates of March 27th-30th. I chose this event first of all because I am very interested in fitness and also I thought it would be interesting to see the event unfold seeing as a member of the event team was a guest speaker in our class a few weeks back. I chose to attend the festival on Friday the 28th and I got to the location it was being held at around 11:15 am. The gates or gate I should say was scheduled to be open at 11:00 and upon my arrival, I was allowed into the area but they did not seem to be ready for any guests just yet even thought there were not many people there. Vendors were still getting ready for the day and tables were still being set up. Also, no events were taking place. This was somewhat disappointing to me because this was the only time I could attend due to school and work and I felt cheated in that I really did not get to experience the event in its entirety. I guess I should have figured that any event held on the beach must be pretty laid back and probably would not start on time.
I did notice two things that I considered legal concerns, the first one being security, which I already talked about and the second one was that there were fitness festival employees driving golf carts up and down the main walkway (which was the only walkway) like there were not even people their. Not only were they driving fast, but were not willing to move for you, you had to move for them. This could cause serious legal issues if they were to every hit any guests. Other possible concerns could be heat exhaustion from both visitors and employees and perhaps even sunburn. Although, there was plenty of shade and also plenty of places to purchase water they are just things to think about. Overall, I enjoyed the event. I definitely found to be interesting and something new. As far as whether or not it is a marketable event, I am not sure. I guess if fitness is your thing, then you would probably think it is marketable and if it is not then you wouldn't. It is the type of event that I think you are going to draw a particular type of crowd and that is it. Personally, I think it would be the type of event that would be very difficult to attract people to if they did not already want to come. You are either into it or not, I don't see much room for attracting a new crowd. Finally, I did not see the event as a big moneymaker but again that could have been because of the time I was there. the festival was located on a small portion
