History Assignment 1 Model A1: The Changing Role and Status

            - Women failed to get the vote between 1900 and 1914 due to many different reasons. In a book called Private lives,Public spirit: A social history of Britian 1870-1914, by Jose Harris. This source says "Almost certainly the majority of women at this time did not see their personal freedom in terms of entry into politics. "this shows that getting the vote was not at the top of most women of the time's agenda, as it says "They looked for escape from the harsh conditions of paid employment, women wanted protection against too much childbirth, and a secure and comfortable home" this shows that women wanted these things much more than gaining the vote. it then goes on to say "In purely numerical terms the most successful womens organisation was the mothers union, [.] This did not seek to extend womens roles. it campaigned for greater protection dignity and status for women in marriage, religion, motherhood and the home." This shows that many women didn't necessarily want equal rights to men they just wanted better rights and conditions than they had at the time. This piece of evidence is helpful, to show the women of the time's views on improving their lives and as an explanation of their apathy to voting.
One group of women who fought from their rights from 1890 onwards was the NUWSS- National Union of Womens Suffrage Societies, It's leader was Millicent Fawcett. Members of the NUWSS were called the suffragists. Members of the NUWSS grew and grew,by 1910 membership had gone up to 27,571 and by 1914 it was 53,000. The leaders of this union believed that peaceful methods of persuasion should be used to gain the vote. Millicent Fawcett believed that women had more chance of gaining the suffrage if women used a non-violent approach. She believed that by using violence or (as she reffered to it) "doing other silly things that men have done when they wanted the laws altered." would go against their chances of gaining the vote.
