History Assignment 1 Model A1: The Changing Role and Status

- Women failed to get the vote between 1900 and 1914 due to many different reasons. In a book called Private lives,Public spirit: A social history of Britian 1870-1914, by Jose Harris. This source says "Almost certainly the majority of women at this time did not see their personal freedom in terms of entry into politics. "this shows that getting the vote was not at the top of most women of the time's agenda, as it says "They looked for escape from the harsh conditions of paid employment, women wanted protection against too much childbirth, and a secure and comfortable home" this shows that women wanted these things much more than gaining the vote. it then goes on to say "In purely numerical terms the most successful womens organisation was the mothers union, [...] This did not seek to extend womens roles. it campaigned for greater protection dignity and status for women in marriage, religion, motherhood and the home." This shows that many women didn't necessarily want equal rights to men they just wanted better rights and conditions than they had at the time. This piece of evidence is helpful, to show the women of the time's views on improving their lives and as an explanation of their apathy to voting.

In the book of Genisis in the bible it says that Eve was created from a rib of Adam and this supposedly showed that it was gods wish that women should be inferior to men. Men and women fulfilled very different roles in society at that time. The mens main role in society was to feed and protect their families whereas a womans role was to look after the home family and children. Many men believed that because of this women did not have the right to gain the vote.In a speech made by Lord Curzon, a conservative leader he says "Women do not have the experience to be able to vote. But there are other problems aswell: the way women have been educated, their lack of strength, and the duties they have. if women did gain the vote, it would mean that most voters would then be women. What would be the eefect of this on the government? I agrre that there are some issues upon which the votes of women might be helpful. But these cases do not cover the whole of political life. What is the good of talking about the equality of the sexe? The first whiz of the bullet, the first boom of the cannon and where is the equality of the sexes then?" This is showing that the overall conservative point of view was that women should not gain the vote although Lord Cruzon does believe that it would be of some advantage if women did gain the vote as they would be of help on some issues although he believes that these cases do not cover the whople of political life by saying this he meant that their votes would not be of that much use to men of the time.

f women who fought from their rights from 1890 onwards was the NUWSS- National Union of Womens Suffrage Societies, It's leader was Millicent Fawcett. Members of the NUWSS were called the suffragists. Members of the NUWSS grew and grew,by 1910 membership had gone u
