Popular Culture

During the beginning years of a person’s life, there are many things that they learn. The thought of popular culture is not one of them. Popular culture, for most, is not something that is learned, but knowledge that is garnered through ones growth. For me, I never really thought about the relevance of popular culture in my life until the other day when this assignment was handed out. At first glance I was not sure if I would be able to pick out three items in my room that dealt with popular culture. After thinking about it for a while, I couldn’t narrow down my choices to three. In today’s life, popular culture is always around us with our nation changing in so many ways; there is no way to narrow down the significant cultural things in our lives. After contemplating this I narrowed my choices down to a Dolce & Gabbana belt, a guitar, and my computer.

I chose the Dolce & Gabbana belt for many reasons. In my opinion, the fashion industry and more importantly the evolution of people’s wardrobes, has played a major role on popular culture and our everyday lives. Fashion trends can be traced back to the beginning of time from the days when people wore leaves and tree bark to hide their coveted “jewels”, to to

Although this belt does not have a great significance in my life, I felt that it represented this subject in a great way. It not only showed what we today consider as ‘fashion’, but it also took me on this vacation in time, and helped me realize the importance of our every day decisions. This belt also represents the present time in our culture. It does this by showing our nations current passion with the designer names that our shown on the tag within the item. Through the Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen line of clothing that you could definitely not miss when walking through the isles of Wal-Mart to the Prada and Armani boutiques on Fifth Avenue in NYC, these names give us our own sense of needs and wants, and a place in society. The future if this medium of popular culture is inevitably good. As each day passes, new trends are embedded in our minds, and our constitution allows us to express ourselves in a way that no other country, nation, or continent, can allow.

Music explores many things that can not be easily brought up in every day culture. Early jazz and soul artists talked of a better life and generally made music that they believed would put people in good moods, while rock music of the 60’s and 70’s led some people to believe that drugs were the second coming of Jesus Christ. As the 80’s brought about an obsession of Adidas shoes and the craziness that was the turntable, Run D.M.C. changed the way that people looked at rap music and ‘minorities’ in general. Another influence that rap had on popular culture was the introduction of the word ‘Fuck’ into mainstream popular life. Profanity was always the ‘taboo’ thing that curious youngsters read on the bathroom stall while taking care of business, until these artists brought this word to their LP’s, TV’s, and normal lunchroom ‘chitter chatter’.

In the early 90’s the computer was still a foreign thing to many people, it was not until the mid to late 90’s that the computer saw the boom that no one ever expected. With the invention of mainstream Microsoft word, the typewriter quickly became a thing of the past, almost as fast as Vanilla Ice lasted on the Billboard charts. In addition to the normal tools of the computer the Internet
