History of the Caterpillar

Benjamin Holt and Daniel Best started the Caterpillar business along time ago in the early 1890’s where they experimented with different types of steam tractors for farming use. They experimented separately, with separate companies they were both pioneers with track-type powered tractor engines.

The Holt family business tradition goes back to the mid 1880’s in California when Benjamin Holt produced his first horse-drawn “Link-Belt Combined Harvester,” starting a new tradition of invention and innovation that has gone on for generations. Later, Benjamin Holt produced some of the earliest steam traction engines and also started a new direction. This brought about a whole new level of customer service, for the young Holt manufacturing company, an emphasis that is still strong in the Holt manufactures through a value-based leadership process.

As Holt’s early tractors grew larger, their giant wheels sunk (bogged) down in the farmlands, encouraging the development of the pioneering Holt track-type model. The Holt family found out that heavy farm equipment sunk down very easily in loose soil. Holt put his creative mind to work once again, using self-laying tracks instead of wheels on his new invention. On November 24, 1904, t

In 1925, Holt manufacturing merged with one of its longtime competitors, Best Tractor Company, to form Caterpillar Tractor Co., consolidating the dealerships of both companies into a network of strong, independent Caterpillar dealerships known for their responsive service. By 1906, Holt tracks had proven so effective in plowing marshy delta lands that wheels have become a thing of the past. Holt machines developed a National reputation.

Then in 1931 the first diesel sixty tractors rolled off the new assembly line in the East Peoria, Illinois, with a new efficient source of power for track-type tractors.

Then in 1915 Holt “Caterpillar” track-type tractors where used by the allies in WW1.

In 1908, the Holt steam-powered crawler proved highly effective in the project to build the Los Angeles, California, Aqueduct. Then Holt moved to another project, powering his tractor with a gasoline powered engine.

Then in 1963, Caterpillar and Mitsubishi Heavy industries LTD. Formed one of the first joint ventures in Japan to include partial U.S ownership. Caterpillar and Mitsubishi LTD. Started production in 1965, since then it has been renamed Shin Caterpillar Mitsubishi LTD. And is now the number 2 maker of construction and mining equipment in Japan.
