Everyone all over the world has different views on what a hero should be and why they think one person is better than another. Some heroes that we think of are perfect in our own image while others can just be as simple as a role model or someone to look up to. Other heroes that we look up to not only contain great characteristics but also have faults that may bring their status lower than we would like it to be. In the play Oedipus the King, Oedipus is recognizable as a dominant king but in time develops into an egotistical hypocrite as his people choose to stray from looking at him as their king. Similar to Oedipus, Kobe Bryant starts out as a respectable individual that people look up to and admire and chooses to act poorly when it came to using good judgment. Both Kobe and Oedipus are heroes that have faults but try to conceal them by refusing to admit their mistakes and blame others for the errors that they alone have made.
Kobe Bryant is an amazing hero to people of all ages. However, he has a couple of his own faults that he must learn to try and prevail over. For instance, Kobe talks about how he wondered what it might be like if he had attended college. He regrets not going to college but states th
at he had already made his decision. Skipping college was a choice that he should not have decided upon since it makes him seem as though he was only saving his money for when he signed to the NBA. Another example of Kobe using bad judgment is when he loses control and his temper gets the best of him. He says that if someone comes at him, he will protect himself by fighting back. He said this when he strikes Reggie Miller at some point in one of their games. This is a bad choice on his part because not only does he put his career in jeopardy, but he also lets down his team mates and everyone who looks up to him as a hero or a role model. When young children see their hero punch someone, they are going to think it is an act that is permitted by all when in fact it is rejected by most. A final and recent act that Kobe made to lower his hero status is when he is charged of raping a woman. Kobe says that he is innocent of the charges that are being filed against him but instead he is guilty of committing adultery. This can probably be one of the worst acts that he can commit. Along with punching another NBA superstar, committing adultery is not something that parents want their children’s heroes to do. It gives them a wrong idea of what a hero or even a person should be when they commit a crime such as these. Kobe is an astonishing basketball player as well as a hero to countless people but he needs to discover ways of controlling his actions to an extent.
Oedipus has multiple pessimistic aspects in his existence that illustrates for his people
