Quartier Mozart Film Review

“Quartier Mozart” is a 1992 Cameroonian film that takes combines traditional folklore with modern themes to produce an interesting perspective on the lives of young men and women in a neighborhood called Mozart. The film uses comedy to discuss gender roles and transitions of power. The central character is a young teenage girl named “Queen of the Hood” who uses witchraft to transform herself into a man to understand the real sexual politics of her neighborhood inside Cameroon’s capital city Yaounde.

Already at a young age, “Queen” recognizes the lack of power amongst women in a traditional system. She doesn’t desire to be a young woman available simply for male pleasure. She asserts a new sort of liberated power by seeking to change her identity. She recognizes the need for pleasure on her on when the local sorceress transforms her in to “MyGuy.” The ultimate taste of power for her is being a woman in a man’s body. Meanwhile, the sorceress takes her power a step further by also changing into a man named “Panka.” Panka has the power to cause a man’s penis to disappear with a simple handshake.

As MyGuy, Queen comes into contact with “Atango,” the local ladies man and “Mad Dog,” a police chie

Panka plays an interesting role since “he” is really a sorceress taking the role of man. With a matter of a handshake, even male phallic power disappears. Mad Dog, the chief of police, hires Panka to protect him based on Panka's amazing power; the power to feminize. Another example of male power is how men refer to each other as Boss. Boss is a greeting used throughout the film when one man talks to another one. The ironic part is that most of them are not really the boss of much – other than their households.

Power is a key theme in the film. Mozart is a poor neighborhood and it is easy to see the effects of colonization: broken down cars, unpaved roads, hand-me-down clothes and shabby homes. Sexual power is definitely used as a means of escape. For the men, it is the one thing they have control over. They choose who to bed with and how often. They choose how many wives to have.
