Can Nepal Survive a Democracy

If corruption in the Nepalese government is surpressed, democracy can survive, and the Maoist rebellion can be stopped. The rebellion is disrupting the efforts of the American Himalayan Foundation to help the people in the mountains, and must be stopped. The people who live in the Himalayan mountain area are some of the poorest in the world. The Maoists attacks that are carried on there destroy the little that the people have. The violence frightens off aid workers and tourists who were once willing to come to Nepal. There is no way for the mountain people to escape the attacks and they have no alternative to being killed. All this must be stopped in order for democracy to survive and Maoists dictatorship to be terminated.

If caught in a battle or attack, a tourist or mountain native would have no way to escape. Most mountain people know nothing about the issues between the Maoists and the government. Very few could point out the differences between a dictatorship and a democracy. No one can flee the huge Maoists armies or the Nepalese firing back. Majority of the deceased were shot while trying to escape the battles, did not even know what the conflict was. Dead civilians are being left unburied because their families fear they will be shot if found connected to the deceased.
