1) How did the Crusades begin and what were their results?The Crusades began when the European Christians decided to undertake a series of expeditions to regain the land from the Muslim forces. Jerusalem was a holy place for three different faiths. Christians believe that Jesus was crucified and resurrected at Jerusalem therefore, they considered it a holy city. To the Muslims, Jerusalem was their third holiest city, Makkah and Madinah being their first and second respectively. It was said that Muhammad ascended to heaven from Jerusalem. Jews believe that Jerusalem was God’s own city and was the site of the ancient temple built by Solomon. In short, Jerusalem was treasured by all three cities and therefore each one wanted to have it as their own which, of coarse, caused conflicts between the three cities. In the 600s A.D. Jerusalem and Palestine fell to Arab invaders. Though, the Arabs tolerated other religions. And so, Christians and Jews were allowed to live in Jerusalem so long as they paid their taxes and followed the cities rules. European traders and religious pilgrims were also welcomed.
