Sun Tzu: An Approach To Business

When ancient Chinese generals came together to form a code of combat, The Art of War resulted. A thirteen-chapter set of regulations, the code covered topics from the environment of battle to the use of spies. The matter that is of interest is the Art of War does not only apply to the battlefield but carries into other fields as well, namely business. When placing the code in the context of business and the business environment, it is clear the Art of War serves a versatile and timeless role.

Leadership is incredibly important for an army as well as a corporation. Imagine an army without a general or a corporation without its executives. Clearly, both bodies cannot function efficiently as they are directionless. The need for solid leadership is an absolute necessity as rule I,ix states “The commander stands for the virtues of wisdom, sincerety, benevolence, courage and strictness.” From the solid leadership stems the trust of the bodies: “The Moral Law causes the people to be in complete accord with their ruler, so that they will follow him regardless of their lives, undismayed by danger.” Now this doesn’t mean that a worker for the cooperation should give their life for the company, but rather, should and will

The sixth consideration asks “On which side are officers and men more highly trained?” This could not possibly relate more directly to the strength of human resources of the corporation. A very direct relationship – the better the personnel, the more able the corporation is. Could you imagine a corporation full of dullards who could only perform the basic skills of their job? Projects and assignments get done at the most rudimentary level and little initiative is ever taken because the employees lack the competence. Just as a general would want a soldier who could operate a cannon and be versed in hand-to-hand combat does an employer want a stock analyst with the ability to deal in bonds as well.

There are seven considerations by which the Art of War claims they can predict victory or defeat. The first and third, respectively, are “Which of the two sovereigns is imbued with the Moral law?” and “With whom lie the advantages of Heaven and Earth.” To relate to Chinese history, this is means which Chinese leader has the divine right to win. To be imbued with the Moral law is to be one with the law which can only mean the leader has a deistic quality him. It can only be proven by the outcome of the battle and similarly the company imbued with the “Moral law” will only be discovered as they succeed in a takeover. The second consideration, “Which general has most ability?” is similar in manner to the first consideration as it is discovered only at the outcome of the takeover. One could suppose one could be more able that another based on experience, education, strength and other such scales of judgment but by that reasoning Goliath surely should have beaten David.

The next consideration poses the question of “Which army is stronger?” Obviously the physical strength of a corporation is not relevant but its metaphoric strength in capital and market share are key characteristics by which two company’s strengths can be
