A Sand County Almanac, by Aldo Leopold, is the quintessential book on the subject of ecology, land ethics, and conservancy. Leopold’s writings had the ability to transcend the masses, read by both professionals and students, by woodsmen and city dwellers. His style of writing was loose and often poetic, and unlike many other books of the same topic, easily readable. His ideology took a very moderate stance, not advocating total conservation, nor total exploitation. In “A Sand County Almanac”, Leopold finds a way to make the reader understand the plight of nature against man, the consequences of this divide, and the responsibilities that we, as humans, have as stewards of environment.

In his writing, Leopold offers several points of view, from both that of “man” and from the ecosystem. The flora in his book don’t stop at being an inanimate, they take on personalities and characteristics of their own. On page 29 Leopold writes about a species of Oak as if it had human characteristics. He says that the “Bur Oaks were the shock troops, sent by the invading forest to storm the prairie; fire is what they had to fight.” Leopold knows that the “forest” has no powe

When Aldo Leopold wrote “A Sand County Almanac”, I doubt that he would have thought of himself as a pioneer in the conservation and nature movement. He probably wouldn’t have considered his ideas and theories on nature to be what many think of as the blueprints of modern conservation. He made the people of his time, till the present, think of their actions and how they affect the natural world around them. Leopold gave us the groundwork to appreciate and enjoy the outdoors more fully, but to also take more seriously the responsibilities we have towards it as members of the community that doesn’t just stop at Homo sapiens, but includes soil, water, plants, and animals.

Another of Leopold’s main points is to try and get the reader to understand conservation in its simplest terms. He acknowledges that Ecology is extremely scientific and wordy, in other words, inaccessible. However, he sees conservation as something that any human can take part in. Using an idea like, “Conservation is the state of harmony between men and land….Harmony with land is like harmony with a friend; you cannot cherish his right hand and chop his left. That is to say, you cannot love game and hate predators; you cannot conserve water and waste the ranges; you cannot build the forest and mine the farm. The Land is one organism. Its parts, like our own, compete with each other and co-operate with each other.” By putting it terms such as these, Leopold has made it quite clear what conservation is all about: finding balance. The hardest part is coming to terms with the fact that there is much about the natural world that we as humans don’t know about. Taking that into account, we must be careful with our beloved nature. There is no telling what could destroy an ecosystem, only that it could take short few years, even months to destroy what has taken centuries to create and would take even longer to repair.
