The Big O and The Ambitious Scott
Some of the many comparisons of Oedipus and Macbeth are that both plays were written from two of the greatest play writers of all time, Sophocles and Shakespeare. Even though both plays were written centuries apart, both are very similar in themes, fate, characters, relationships with wives, and tragic downfall of the main character. Both plays give a good lesson in irony and morals. A prophecy is a similar theme in both plays, Oedipus was born with a prophecy from the Greek gods that he would kill his father and marry is mother. The three witches in Macbeth prophesize that he will be king of Scotland. The witches are not specific on how Macbeth will become king, and Macbeth did not bother to ask. Macbeth wants to be king so he accepts his prophecy. On the other hand, Oedipus tries to change his prophecy by leaving his home and parents (who adopted him as a baby) and ironically ends back up at Thebes, his real hometown. On the way he ends up murdering his father who turns out to be the king of Thebes. Tragic irony is another similar theme in both plays. Oedipus is persistent in finding the murderer of King Laius. In his persistence he finds out the truth, he murdered La
Tragedy struck both men as well; Oedipus was so persistence to find out the murderer of Laius. He finally finds out that he is actually the murderer and he loses both his kingdom and his family. Oedipus ends up stabbing his eyes out so he cannot see the terrible things that he has done anymore. “He ripped off the gold brooches she was wearing…raised them over his head…and brought them right down into his eyes.” Macbeth carries so much guilt from his murder of Duncan that he thinks his life is just a play in which actors dance around. “Life’s but a walking shadow, a poor player that struts and frets upon the stage and then is heard no more.” The death of his life was the last straw for Macbeth, and his life comes to an end when Macduff beheads him in the last scene. Both Oedipus and Macbeth had strong-hearted wives. Jocasta, who ends up being Oedipus’ mother and wife is very ignorant and outspoken just like Oedipus. Lady Macbeth is even more determined to get the king’s title had Macbeth. She tells Macbeth the extremes that she would do to get Macbeth as king. She says, “How tender ‘tis to love the babe that milks me: I would, while it was smiling i
